Summary:
Following the unexpected death of her father, 18-year-old Layken is forced to be the rock for both her mother and younger brother. Outwardly, she appears resilient and tenacious, but inwardly, she's losing hope.
Enter Will Cooper: The attractive, 21-year-old new neighbor with an intriguing passion for slam poetry and a unique sense of humor. Within days of their introduction, Will and Layken form an intense emotional connection, leaving Layken with a renewed sense of hope.
Not long after an intense, heart-stopping first date, they are slammed to the core when a shocking revelation forces their new relationship to a sudden halt. Daily interactions become impossibly painful as they struggle to find a balance between the feelings that pull them together, and the secret that keeps them apart.
"Slammed is a heart-wrenching, emotional, yet somehow humorous journey of two souls that are destined to be together, despite the factors that stand in their way. So much more than a romance, Slammed teaches lessons about love, life and the soul-deep moments in between. Not to mention the forbidden...it's oh, so good." ~Katie's Book Blog.

From Goodreads
My Review:
I was browsing books around Goodreads when I came across Slammed, it had such good reviews and so I decided to give it a try: it's one of my favorites now.
It's hard to review a book like Slammed and show just how good it was. Slammed was, looking back on it, an incredibly sad story, one of the factors that brought the main characters together was their grief, but I didn't feel really sad, just a little bit - and it's not because the author didn't manage to pour emotion into the story, it's just that it was so well done that all of the events that happened through the book, no matter how sad they were, seemed right. It's like the author prepared you for every upcoming blow, so when a shocking event happened, you were prepared.
Aside from the sad parts, this book was also really funny, Will was such a cute and lovely character, all I wanted to do through the book was to kiss and hug him - Which brings me to the next part, the romance in this book was great, but I don't think it was the main factor in the story [in a good way], Yes, Will and Layken have their struggles through the book but, Layken's family was the main thing, and it was amazing. I loved being inside Layken's mind, at times a bit of a headstrong, but it was such a good book and story.
Another good point was the Slam Poetry, I had no idea of what this was until I read this book, and I honestly hope it's real, I'd love to go to a performance like this one once in my life. I'm adding a little bit of a Slam poem Will makes in the books right after this review, hope you like it.
Seriously, read this book, I was so surprised that I like it so much, and what's even more surprising? Book Two is better. Highly Highly Recommend! :D!
“Sometimes life gets in your
way.
it gets all up in your damn way.
But it doesn't get all up in your damn way
because it wants you to just give up and let it take control.
Life doesn't get all up in your damn way because it just wants you to hand it all over and be carried along.
Life wants you to fight it
Learn how to make it your own.
it wants you to grab and axe and hack through the wood.
It wants you to get a sledgehammer and break through concrete.
It wants you to grab a torch and burn through the metal and steel until you can reach through and grab it.
Life wants you to grab all the organized, the alphabetized, the chronological, the sequenced. It wants you to mix it all together,
stir it up,
blend it.”
