Summary:
Kacey Cleary’s whole life imploded four years ago in a drunk-driving accident. Now she’s working hard to bury the pieces left behind—all but one. Her little sister, Livie. Kacey can swallow the constant disapproval from her born-again aunt Darla over her self-destructive lifestyle; she can stop herself from going kick-boxer crazy on Uncle Raymond when he loses the girls’ college funds at a blackjack table. She just needs to keep it together until Livie is no longer a minor, and then they can get the hell out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
But when Uncle Raymond slides into bed next to Livie one night, Kacey decides it’s time to run. Armed with two bus tickets and dreams of living near the coast, Kacey and Livie start their new lives in a Miami apartment complex, complete with a grumpy landlord, a pervert upstairs, and a neighbor with a stage name perfectly matched to her chosen “profession.” But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle all of them. What she can’t handle is Trent Emerson in apartment 1D.
Kacey doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t. It’s safer that way. For everyone. But sexy Trent finds a way into her numb heart, reigniting her ability to love again. She starts to believe that maybe she can leave the past where it belongs and start over. Maybe she’s not beyond repair.
But Kacey isn’t the only one who’s broken. Seemingly perfect Trent has an unforgiveable past of his own; one that, when discovered, will shatter Kacey’s newly constructed life and send her back into suffocating darkness.
**Warning - This is a Mature YA/New Adult book. Contains sex and violence**

My Review:
I had seen the work of K. A. Tucker before, her Anathema series has been around the blogosphere for a while, and I actually think I own it but I've never read it. Even though it is not the same genre as Ten Tiny Breaths, if it's half as good, I am going to kick myself for not reading it sooner. K.A. Tucker definitely knows her stories and her characters.
I really liked Kacey's story, and the way it unravels, slowly releasing bits of information and welcoming you into her life and her past. She was a stubborn person that seemed like a bitch at her best but with good intentions at heart. Her biggest priority is her sister and she's willing to do anything for her, so when situations get tough at home she takes her away and they both start new lives. This was one of my favorite aspects of the book, how they both arrive at this new place with new neighbors and they slowly start to build relationships and a support system.
Among them we find Trent... I'll admit I didn't like the idea of these two together in the beginning, Kacey's knees got week with him and she was simply in aw at his presence and didn't understand why her titanium cover went down with him. This is were I was conflicted, the only thing Trent seemed to have was good looks, so it just wasn't clicking. But this is no insta-love story, just as Kacey gets to know him and slowly figure him out, you can't help but bow at his presence and admit that he is something else; and that even though in Kacey's eyes he is perfect, just like her and every character in this story, he is flawed.
Kacey seemed strong, and no matter how many smart-ass replies she'd give, or how strong she'd seem, you couldn't help but feel the pain that was behind every sentence and the melancholy in her. Ten Tiny Breaths was done beautifully, the way everyone is connected, each character developed and the constant reminder that sometimes taking a deep breath is the only way you can remind yourself you're alive and that your lungs love the taste of air. An excellent debut in the genre for K.A. Tucker, A New Adult must read.
