Summary:
Most high school sports teams have rivalries with other schools. At Hamilton High, it's a civil war: the football team versus the soccer team. And for her part,Lissa is sick of it. Her quarterback boyfriend, Randy, is always ditching her to go pick a fight with the soccer team or to prank their locker room. And on three separate occasions Randy's car has been egged while he and Lissa were inside, making out. She is done competing with a bunch of sweaty boys for her own boyfriend's attention
Then Lissa decides to end the rivalry once and for all: She and the other players' girlfriends go on a hookup strike. The boys won't get any action from them until the football and soccer teams make peace. What they don't count on is a new sort of rivalry: an impossible girls-against-boys showdown that hinges on who will cave to their libidos first. But what Lissa never sees coming is her own sexual tension with the leader of the boys, Cash Sterling...

My Review:
Meh. This book was just meh. After reading The Duff I had really high expectations for this novel. The Duff was genius, I loved it so so much, and Lysistrata is my favorite comedy of them all, as a matter of fact, it was the only comedy I ever liked in High School. When I saw this book was a re-telling of Lysistrata, I was thrilled, when I saw who the author was, I was jumping with joy, when I finished reading it, I was so disappointed.
First, I thought there would be a lot of fun boy v. girl episodes (like in the novel Girl V. Boy), and there weren't. Second, I didn't like Lissa, which is a problem when you consider she's the main character and that the book is told in her point of view. I was constantly exasperated with the way she acted and even though I thought the writing was good, at parts I just found it really hard to keep going due to my low patience for Lissa's behavior.
The book on itself wasn't really bad, but I had a picture in my mind of how it would be and well, it failed to be what I hoped for it.
Cash was really cute, thumbs up for him, I really liked him and he seemed rational, Randy was a douche and overall it was also a funny story. If you liked The Duff, you should give it a try, maybe you'll enjoy it.
My review of The Duff.
“I'm serious. They'll call me a pussy."
"And if you help them, I'll call you a dick. So no matter what you do, you're going to be some form of genitalia.”
Aw, I'm sorry you didn't like this one! I've only read The DUFF, which, like you, I really liked. I was planning on picking this up soonish.
ReplyDeleteI really wanted to like this one :/ If you do get the chance to read it I really hope you enjoy it :)
DeleteI enjoyed this one but I didn't like it as much as her other two books. Lissa was kind of annoying but Cash was super cute. I didn't like him as much as Wesley either or Nathan from A Midsummer's Nightmare. I like the whole sex strike. That was funny! But Randy was such a douche! I wanted to slap him.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Shut Out, but I know what you mean about it being just meh compared to The Duff. The Duff was on a whole other level, and even though I liked this book, it just didn't compare.
