Summary:
Sixteen-year-old Eon has a dream, and a mission. For years, he's been studying sword-work and magic, toward one end. He and his master hope that he will be chosen as a Dragoneye-an apprentice to one of the twelve energy dragons of good fortune.
But Eon has a dangerous secret. He is actually Eona, a sixteen-year-old girl who has been masquerading as a twelve-year-old boy. Females are forbidden to use Dragon Magic; if anyone discovers she has been hiding in plain sight, her death is assured.
When Eon's secret threatens to come to light, she and her allies are plunged into grave danger and a deadly struggle for the Imperial throne. Eon must find the strength and inner power to battle those who want to take her magic...and her life.

My Review:
I will make this review as short and to the point as possible. Here we go
*Cracks knuckles*
First part of the book *not sure of what %*
I cannot even express how much I enjoy all of the first part of Eon; when he starts preparing himself for the ceremony in which he will see if he can become a dragoneye apprentice, all of his inner struggles as Eona and everything that's at stake. Alison Goodman is a master storyteller, that's a fact. I could see everything in my head playing so so clearly, I actually ended up with a desperate need for there to be a movie for such a great story.
What happened when Eon was presented before the dragons... Holly.... looking back on it, I think it was predictable, but I was so caught up in the story that it all just surprised and amazed me A LOT. It was all flawless.
Second part of the book
Okay so, first part was magnificent, but second part.... not so good. In this point the story was still pretty predictable. Problem? I was too conscious about it, and every time Eon made a mistake that took him in the opposite direction of his desires, I would throw a tantrum because if would be painfully obvious to me how he was making mistakes.
Third and final part of the book
Eon's stupidity was HUGE, but still, had he not been stupid, there would have been no consequences. The consequences were awesome: the action, the mystery, the nerves, it was all great again and it was easy for me to forgive Eon - or at least sort of forgive. The problem is that he kept too many secrets and told too many lies that he didn't need to tell, yes, a few were necessary, but there were other he could have easily done without,
Overall
Overall I really really enjoyed Eon which is a lot to say because there was no romance. You read that? NONE. If you know me you'll know that I never ever read anything if it doesn't have the least bit of romance, and still, I found this to be fabulous. There was only a tiny hint that there could be a possible love interest in the next book which was enough for me.
Eon was a breath of fresh air, very different from anything else I've ever read, it was intense and it really is magnificent. The moment I stopped with the story it would just linger in my mind, I wanted to get back to it as soon as possible and be immersed in the world of this novel. Alison Goodman really is an amazing storyteller.

“I found power in accepting the truth of who I am. It may not be a truth that others can accept, but I cannot live any other way. How would it be to live a lie every minute of your life.”
I bought this one a few months ago on a whim so I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it. Also rather happy to hear there is no romance, it's really rare that you find a YA book with no romance in it.
ReplyDeleteWhat?! No romance!!! LOL I'm not a big fantasy reader either. But it does sound interesting and exciting. I do feel you on the whole making a lot of dumb mistakes thing though. I really hate when characters never learn and keeping doing the dumbest things.
ReplyDeleteI know! I was so surprised that I enjoyed it, I thought there would be at least a little bit, but nope, and it's funny 'cause I didn't even realize it! It wasn't until I was finished with the whole thing that I realized it wasn't at all romantic. If you ever get around to reading it I hope you enjoy it :)
