Unmaking Hunter Kennedy - Anne Eliot

Unmaking Hunter Kennedy by Anne Eliot
Date Released: October 17th 2012
Publisher: Butterfly Books
Pages: 422 pages
Format: Kindle Edition
Date Read:
Source: Author
Summary:
After a car accident--an event he considers a prank gone bad--pop star, Hunter Kennedy is forced to hide out with his aunt in small-town Colorado. He’s supposed to rest, heal his scars and attend high school in disguise until the press dies down. But he only wants to get back to work.

Worse, the girl who’s been assigned to make him over into a geek is a major geek herself. Vere Roth is a chattering pixie, a blushing tornado and a complete social disaster. He’s never met a girl who’s never-been-kissed, believes in romance and thinks Hunter’s a 'nice' guy.

Funny thing is...Hunter is nice around Vere because she’s his first real friend. He also can’t seem to stop sharing his secrets or keep her out of his heart. Knowing he’d never deserve a girl as sweet as Vere, he resigns himself to the friend zone, and helps his new bestie with her own makeover.

She tortures him daily for ridiculous guy advice on how to snag her life-long crush. A guy Hunter thinks is totally wrong for Vere, and sadly, one who has taken note of Vere’s transformation.

When Vere asks her best friend for some kissing advice, Hunter can’t resist...

And that’s when things get out of control...

From Goodreads

My Review:
Star Hunter Kennedy made a mistake, a BIG mistake, one that cost him a trip to Colorado to visit his aunt, one that forces him to find a new (dorky) identity and one that is forcing a permanent shadow over him. Hunter arrives to Colorado as a little ball of depression, but this is where Vere comes in, bringing contrast to his lifestyle, a breath of fresh air and together they will help each other.

Now first things first: The plot. When I first read the summary I was all giddy and couldn't wait to see how the story would turn out, especially because I couldn't get the picture of the movie The Prince and Me out of my mind (No, Hunter is not a prince, he's a singer.). Of course they are both different but just as entertaining. Hunter was a character I really liked from the beginning and it was easy to sympathize with him. Vere was a little bit harder to adjust too, when I first started reading she and I were not clicking. I understood that she was a shy character that blushed easily but at times her conduct felt cheesy and I would roll my eyes at her. 25% into the book my issues with her were pushed aside and I was able to follow Vere and Hunter more easily (It is told in alternative POV) their love story developing, their trust slowly building, and a perfect first kiss.

The story was more than just a fluffy read, Hunter's situation adding depth to it. I thought the pace of the story was perfect, everything developed neatly and even though it was a predictable read it was still very enjoyable to watch how things unravel. The ending was a bit too happy for my taste but, honestly all cute stories deserve good endings, and speaking of happy, I constantly had a smile on my face while reading this book, and considering I've been under quite the stress lately (Barely one week back at school and I'm already stressed) this book was just what I needed :) A great Chick-Lit!

Waiting On Wednesday (12)

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine.
I'm Waiting On...

 Summary:
In the darkest places, even love is deadly.

Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.

Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius—and madness—in her own blood.

Expected publication:  February 5th 2013

Why?
This story reminds me of Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare. Yes, I am awake of the fact that there are no Nephilim in this story, but, the crazy experiments? the weird creatures? it seems familiar - to me at least. Which is why I am really looking forward to this one!! and the release date is so close! But I can't buy it u.u must finish with my 5 books before I buy something *sigh* I must stay strong.

Level 2 - Lenore Appelhans

Level 2 (The Memory Chronicles, #1)Level 2 by Lenore Appelhans
(The Memory Chronicles #1)
Date Released: January 15th 2013
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Pages: 288 pages
Format: Hardcover
Date Read:  January 15th 2013
Source: Publisher
Summary:
Three levels. Two loves. One choice. Debut novelist, Lenore Appelhans has written a thrilling otherworldly young adult novel about a place that exists between our world (Level 1) and what comes after life (Level 2).

'I pause to look around the hive - all the podlike chambers are lit up as the drones shoot up on memories ... I've wanted to get out of here before, but now the tight quarters start to choke me. There has to be more to death than this.'

Felicia Ward is dead. Trapped in a stark white afterlife limbo, she spends endless days replaying memories, of her family, friends, boyfriend ... and of the guy who broke her heart. The guy who has just broken into Level 2 to find her.

Felicia learns that a rebellion is brewing, and it seems she is the key. Suspended between heaven and earth, she must make a choice. Between two worlds, two lives and two loves.

From Goodreads

My Review:
Errr.... Where do I begin? There was a lot going on in this novel, lots of things bothered me and confused me. It is hard to explain how I felt about this novel, so I will do this point by point, both the good and the bad:

*One: Welcome to Level 2/Limbo, where you can only access your memories.
Level 2 is the space between earth and....heaven?  In this point you can only view your memories over and over, but you can also sort of trade your memories with the rest of the dead people. Ok so, this is really depressing, I mean, think about it, you die and you can only look at what you had, the people you loved, what you lost. I'd want to kill myself even if I was already dead. I personally think it would be really miserable and seriously depressed, just there never going anywhere. Because even though our memories are what make us, I still don't think I'd just want to spend the rest of... limbo watching them.

Felicia was not depressed and neither of her companions - that's fine. But they also weren't really questioning things or trying to break free. They seemed way too calm for my taste, also immature. One would think that after watching your life a couple of thousands of times you would have a different vision of things, be a bit of an 'old soul', but no; Felicia and her 'friends' are just a bunch of teenage giggly girls that want boys.

*Two: Flashbacks/Memories. Lots of them.
Usually when there's flashbacks in books they annoy me, in Level 2 they were actually enjoyable. I think they were better than the 'present'. Bonus point on the author for managing the memories well, they weren't tedious, nor was I tapping my foot impatiently waiting for them to be over. So yeah, thumbs up to that.

Oh and speaking of memories, Felicia has this really terrible terrible past, well, I personally didn't think it was THAT terrible. Sure, she made lots of BIG mistakes, but I felt like she was a little bit too dramatic about them - my opinion, of course.

*Three: Religion.
Another good point for the author. Writing about things like the in between and heaven and such can be a tricky subject. There's God, good, evil and so many things that can be hard to go through, but I do think that the author handled them really well. And even if a lot of Felicia's memories had to do with Church and her Christian Camp, it didn't feel like they were trying to shove religion down my throat. Double thumbs up.

*Four: The characters.
All, and I do mean ALL of the characters in this novel were as flat as cardboard sheets. If something happened to any of them, I didn't care. There was an exiting moment for Felicia, I felt nothing. She was in love, nothing. She was angry, nada. Just, meh. I passed the pages, and I never engaged with the novel. They could have all died and I really would have not cared at all.

There were parts that were meant to be inspiring, but I just read and read and kept thinking 'yeah yeah, what's next?' The only emotion this book managed to provoke in me was frustration. Here and there Felicia would say or do things that made me want to hit her, she seemed too selfish or too stubborn to me. Her little tantrums would appear here and there through the book, apart from that, she was flat.

*Five: The wanna-be Love triangle?
I'm not even sure if it was supposed to be a sort of Love triangle, but I really felt nothing for either of the boys. Neil seemed as plain as Felicia. Julian was the only character that seemed slightly interesting and I have no idea of what happened to him by the end of the book. Basically he would be the only reason why I would read the next book in this series (I still don't know if I will)

*Six: The Ending (no spoilers, don't worry)
I mean, what? I read it two times and I believe that I was meant to feel something? like, you know, apart from confusion? I guess it was meant to be sort of...intense? because a lot of things do happen in those last few pages but, em... yeah, no, just no.

CONCLUSION?
The book wasn't THAT bad. I did NOT love the story, nor did I hate it. It was a simple meh. It's sad, I really hoped I would like it, especially because the story did have its value. It really points how our memories make us who we are and that they are really all we have. The people we meet, the things we go through, both good and bad are all part of us, you can't erase anything, otherwise you wouldn't be the you you are right now. I tried to engage with the story, but it didn't work. This was all my personal opinion, lots of people loved this book, in fact I have yet to stumble on a bad review, maybe I'm just weird, but this was not my type of book.

I do think that it's a book worth a try. I suggest you pick it up and see what you think, because just as it was not my cup of tea, it can easily be your perfect cup of tea. Overall it was okay, I guess. Will I continued with the next book? Maybe.

This book was given to me by the publisher. This was my honest review.

Salvation - Anne Osterlund + INTERVIEW

Salvation by Anne Osterlund
Date Released: January 10th 2013
Publisher: Penguin Young Readers Group
Format: ARC
Date Read: December 31st, 2012
Source: Author
Summary:
A smart, unexpected romance from an award-winning author.

Salvador Resendez--Salva to his friends--appears to have it all. His Mexican immigrant family has high expectations, and Salva intends to fulfill them. He's student body president, quarterback of the football team, and has a near-perfect GPA. Everyone loves him.

Especially Beth Courant, AKA the walking disaster area. Dreamy and shy, Beth is used to blending into the background. But she's also smart, and she has serious plans for her future.

Popular guy and bookish girl--the two have almost nothing in common. Until fate throws them together and the attraction is irresistible. Soon Beth is pushing Salva to set his sights higher than ever--because she knows he has more to offer, more than even he realizes.

Then tragedy strikes--and threatens to destroy everything that Salva has worked for. Will Beth's love be enough to save him?

Thoughtful and romantic, this is a beautifully written story about following your heart and fulfilling your potential

From Goodreads

My Review:
Salvation is Anne Osterlund's first Contemporary YA novel, and for it being her debut in the genre I think it is excellent. First, I was really impressed with how Osterlund really captured the pressure and struggles many Mexican families have to go through. Being a Mexican myself, I found it incredibly easy to sympathize with Salvador, and I really think that everyone will be able to relate to him.

Salvador is a really smart boy, he has done everything that was expected of him. He is the golden boy, he has fulfilled his father's wishes, has never let down his friends and has always followed the rules. He's a good boy. This is where Beth comes in, the walking disaster. I had this idea that Beth wold be this wild girl that throws Salva off balance or something, but no, turns out she's literally a disaster. Walks-and-trips, drops-everything, can't-paint-without-making-a-mess sort of disaster. She thinks Salva can be more than good,  that he has much much more to offer. She helps Salva discover the biggest wish of all - his own.

Salva's father only wants the best for him and his family, which is why they brought them all to the States. The next step, if for Salva to actually be someone, not just an ordinary Mexican worker, to look down at and to treat as less. Again, Osterlund surprised me here, this is what we strive for, this is defined as our success. At least in my city and with my peers it is, we all want jobs in the States, it is the biggest goal of some of us, which is sad and something that is also marked in the novel, staying in Mexico or going back is not an option, it's a step backward. It was so easy to understand Salva's father, no matter how uptight he seemed, and it was easy to understand Salva as well, his own desperation and decisions he makes toward the end of the book, how he finds his own voice despite everything else.

Beth was also a great character, she knew how much someone or something had to offer and she didn't expect any less. It almost felt like she was that little voice in the back of our minds telling us to push forward and I really wished I was more like Beth, who honestly had every reason to be disappointed in life, and yet, she kept pushing.

I really liked Salvation, the ending was great, it had my heart pounding and just wondering 'How is this going to have a happy ending?!!! in fact how will this end at all?!!" I thought there was even a sequel I didn't know about, but no worries, it is wrapped up perfectly well. It was a great story and all of the characters will stick with me for a long time, especially Salva and Beth :)

Interview with the author

1. In between writing and reading, what do you like to do?
Watch figure skating, spoil a certain fluffy orange cat, and indulge in chocolate chip mint ice cream.

2. Describe Salvation Twitter style. 140 characters or less. GO!
A YA contemporary novel about Salva, a young man who doesn’t want to be everyone’s salvation, and Beth, the walking disaster area.

3. I think we've all felt at some point in our lives like the weight of the world is on our shoulders and that we have to please the needs of our parents or friends, which made Salva a really relatable character. So what was the process of creating him as a character?
I don’t think I exactly create my characters. It’s more a process of listening. Salva didn’t bother to introduce himself the first time we met. He was busy colliding with Beth and telling me how she was a walking disaster area. Then Pepe, Salva’s best friend, shoved him into the prologue. At which point I realized I had a story. Because Salva was conflicted, brilliant, and not quite comfortable at the center of the spotlight. I had written about a scene and a half when I realized that his major flaw was the fact that he allowed his friends to direct his inner compass. And I had written a full 160 pages before I realized he wasn’t telling me that his mother was dead. (Talk about denial). It took two-thirds of the second draft before I found out how stubborn he was. And by that point, of course, there was no turning back!

4. How do the characters from you earlier novels—Academy 7, Aurelia, and Exile—feel about Salvation?
My other main characters—Aerin, Dane, Aurelia, and Robert—are very supportive of Salva and Beth. First, because we are all a team. And second because my other characters have free rein to raid the cupboards for chocolate while Salva, Beth, and I are on tour.

5. Tell us something at random.
In addition to celebrating Salvation’s release, I spent this week teaching kindergarten, ESL, and special ed.

6. And now, between You and Me, what’s in store for the future?
My current New Year’s resolution is to finish Redemption. Aurelia, the heroine of Aurelia and Exile, demands that I wrap up her third and final novel. She’s dying to tell you all about it, but she knows this is Salva and Beth’s moment so she is very patiently—for Aurelia—biting her tongue. Though, as a tradeoff for such good behavior, I did post one blog about Redemption here.

The Essence - Kimberly Derting

The Essence by Kimberly Derting
(The Pledge #2)
Date Released: January 1sr, 2012
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry
Format: Hardcover
Date Read: January 11th, 212
Source: Margaret K. McElderry
Summary:
“Danger, dread, mystery, and romance” (Booklist) continue in the second book of The Pledge trilogy, as Charlie’s reign is under siege from the most unusual of enemies.

At the luminous conclusion of The Pledge, Charlaina defeated the tyrant Sabara and took her place as Queen of Ludania. But Charlie knows that Sabara has not disappeared: The evil queen’s Essence is fused to Charlie’s psyche, ready to arise at the first sign of weakness.

Charlie is not weak, but she’s being pushed to the brink. In addition to suppressing the ever-present influence of Sabara, she’s busy being queen—and battling a growing resistance determined to return Ludania to its discriminatory caste system. Charlie wants to be the same girl Max loves, who Brook trusts, but she’s Your Majesty now, and she feels torn in two.

As Charlie journeys to an annual summit to meet with leaders of nearby Queendoms—an event where her ability to understand all languages will be the utmost asset—she is faced with the ultimate betrayal. And the only person she can turn to for help is the evil soul residing within.

From Goodreads

My Review:
Wow, this book was a bit of a surprise, I wasn't really sure were the story would go in the second book, so it was pretty interesting and intense to see what Charlie had to go through. But first, I just have to say that I really loved The Pledge, I read the ARC and the ending left me in desperate need for the sequel, so when I started reading The Essence I was so exited, but through the first 80 pages or so I was so incredibly lost and confused. I couldn't remember the characters, if they were related, how they had met, how Charlie had defeated Sabara, Nothing!!!! I was really frustrated because there were not many reminders through the book, which could've really come in handy.

Aside from this issue, after the 80 pages of frustration, the book jumped right into the action and tension scenes, which were great. By this point who was related to whom didn't really matter and I was able to get into the book easily and enjoy it. Watching how Charlie's life had changed and how she was adjusting to everything was amusing and weird, in The Pledge she was more of a rebel and now she was a queen, so the contrast was big, but it was great to see her grow as a character.

I hated that we didn't get to see more of Max, he played such a big role in The Pledge and in The Essence he was barely there, but I enjoyed meeting the new characters in the story, and knowing more about Sabara, whom I actually liked. I'm not sure if that's weird, but I sympathized with her and I am really eager to see how things will turn out for her in the third book.

I knew who the traitor was form the beginning, but overall the ending was surprising - Charlie's reaction, her sister, Brook's situation among other things - It was all very stressful in a good way that left me craving for more and I really really cannot wait for the third book to come out. I want to see what happens with Queen Elena, with Charlie and Sabara and just ahh!!! I feel so giddy thinking of it and I just can't wait. I highly recommend this series to any dystopian fans, I really enjoyed The Pledge and even though The Essence was different, it didn't disappoint me.

Thank you so much to Simon&Schuster for sending the book and to Itching for Books  for hosting this tour!

Top Ten Tuesday (5)

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.

Top Ten Reading Goals for 2013

1. Read a least 65 books, which is the number of books I read in 2012.
2. Read 5 books at least before buying more.
3. Read/Listen? more audiobooks.
4. Read no more than 2 books at the same time (already failing on this one)
5. Read more paranormal books.
6. Read Pride and Prejudice.
7. Read the Lord of the Rings books.
8. Read something from John Green (Halfway there, already started with Will Grayson, Will Grayson)
9. Read every single day at least half an hour. Even during finals, I will make time.
10. Read the books I want. I don't know if this one even makes sense, but last year it felt like I was reading out of compromise more than out of pleasure. I just want to enjoy my books this year.

I am determined to do number 2 and I need to work harder on number 4. As for point 6 and 7, I love the movies so so much, I really want to read the novels. Wish me luck! What's your TTT?

Shut Out - Kody Keplinger

Shut Out by Kody Keplinger
Date Released:  September 5th 2011
Publisher: Poppy
Pages: 273 pages
Format: ARC/Paperback
Date Read: June 24, 2012
Source: Giveaway Won
Summary:
Most high school sports teams have rivalries with other schools. At Hamilton High, it's a civil war: the football team versus the soccer team. And for her part,Lissa is sick of it. Her quarterback boyfriend, Randy, is always ditching her to go pick a fight with the soccer team or to prank their locker room. And on three separate occasions Randy's car has been egged while he and Lissa were inside, making out. She is done competing with a bunch of sweaty boys for her own boyfriend's attention

Then Lissa decides to end the rivalry once and for all: She and the other players' girlfriends go on a hookup strike. The boys won't get any action from them until the football and soccer teams make peace. What they don't count on is a new sort of rivalry: an impossible girls-against-boys showdown that hinges on who will cave to their libidos first. But what Lissa never sees coming is her own sexual tension with the leader of the boys, Cash Sterling...

From Goodreads

My Review:

Meh. This book was just meh. After reading The Duff I had really high expectations for this novel. The Duff was genius, I loved it so so much, and Lysistrata is my favorite comedy of them all, as a matter of fact, it was the only comedy I ever liked in High School. When I saw this book was a re-telling of Lysistrata, I was thrilled, when I saw who the author was, I was jumping with joy, when I finished reading it, I was so disappointed.

First, I thought there would be a lot of fun boy v. girl episodes (like in the novel Girl V. Boy), and there weren't. Second, I didn't like Lissa, which is a problem when you consider she's the main character and that the book is told in her point of view. I was constantly exasperated with the way she acted and even though I thought the writing was good, at parts I just found it really hard to keep going due to my low patience for Lissa's behavior.

The book on itself wasn't really bad, but I had a picture in my mind of how it would be and well, it failed to be what I hoped for it.

Cash was really cute, thumbs up for him, I really liked him and he seemed rational, Randy was a douche and overall it was also a funny story. If you liked The Duff, you should give it a try, maybe you'll enjoy it.

My review of The Duff.

“I'm serious. They'll call me a pussy."

"And if you help them, I'll call you a dick. So no matter what you do, you're going to be some form of genitalia.”

About Me

Hi! My name is Jude, like a Beattles song. I was born on a warm summer night but it's cold rainy winter days the ones I like most. I like to sit on my bed and read all night long. I have an undeniable passion for music, poetry, books, writing, making videos and design. My cats and my dogs are the things I love most in this world. And In Between all those things, I like to blog. Welcome :)
